Oak Woodland Restoration
California black oaks (Quercus
kelloggii) produce acorns which were a
critical food source for the
Ahwahneechee that lived here, and the
trees provide food and shelter to many
species of wildlife.
This oak woodland was
damaged by people trampling
the vegetation and compacting
the soil. Oak seedlings were
unable to survive. The oak
woodland will not exist in the
future without seedlings to replace the
older trees as they die. In 1991, this
oak woodland was replanted with
vegetation and fenced to protect the
remaining environment.
